What is sickle cell disease?
Sickle cell disease is a genetic disease caused by the transmission from father and mother, of a mutation of β-globin, which causes the presence of an abnormal hemoglobin. The term hemoglobinopathy encompasses sickle cell disease and thalassemias, which are both observed worldwide.
