Creation of a healthcare collaboration network for sickle cell disease in the Guiana Shield

The symposium on cross-border cooperation for sickle cell disease management lasted 3 days. The French Guiana Territorial Collectivity welcomed five delegations from the Guiana shield. An agreement has been signed and cooperation is now expected. It should promote research development

It is only a draft framework agreement at the moment, but the healthcare players are optimistic. The document signed on 25 October states that the healthcare players from French Guiana and neighbouring countries are committed to share their expertise for the  management of the sickle cell disease patients. This cooperation is eagerly awaited by patients and health professionals. It involves French Guiana, Venezuela, Brazil, Guyana and Suriname. This draft framework agreement must now be validated in each country. This care network will facilitate the movement of patients in this region by guaranteeing effective care when a crisis occurs.

Dr. Phoena Moahmed-Rambaraw of Guyana Public Hospital is convinced of the usefulness of this network:

… we are here to look at opportunities and establish collaboration between healthcare players  in the Guiana Shield and the Caribbean. We can improve health if we work together. Sickle cell disease is still a little-known disease in our region. There is little information shared in our territories. I think that by collaborating we can learn from each other, work together and improve care in our territories…
