Cell Disease and Thalassemia) is a Caribbean network bringing together researchers and clinicians committed to combating sickle cell disease and thalassaemia.<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"p1\">Across the Caribbean, the prevalence of the \u03b2S gene responsible for sickle cell disease is high, making sickle cell disease the most common genetic disease in the region and a major public health concern.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">A high prevalence of the genes responsible for thalassaemia is also found across the region, particularly in countries with a population of significant Asian descent.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-270aa58 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"270aa58\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The haemoglobin abnormality caused by the presence of the \u03b2S gene, which characterises sickle cell disease, triggers under certain conditions:<\/p><ul role=\"list\"><li>the deformation,<\/li><li>the rigidification of red blood cells,<\/li><li>and the abnormal adhesion of red blood cells to vessel walls.<\/li><\/ul><p class=\"translation-block\">The consequences are multiple: obstruction of the microvasculature (vaso-occlusion), premature destruction of red blood cells (haemolysis), and the onset of acute and chronic complications such as painful crises, anaemia, infections, strokes, priapism, leg ulcers, and pulmonary complications. <br>\nThalassaemia is characterised by the absence or reduced synthesis of haemoglobin chains; the resulting symptoms are variable, with severe forms accompanied by anaemia and developmental disorders.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-aa70e94 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"aa70e94\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-19aa93b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"19aa93b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"translation-block\">In response to the heterogeneity in the management of these conditions across the Caribbean, specialists in sickle cell disease from 11 Caribbean countries and territories (Bahamas, Barbados, Cuba, Dominica, Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Haiti, Jamaica, Martinique, Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago), who met in Guadeloupe in 2006, deemed it necessary to establish collaborations to harmonise management practices and ensure that patients across the Caribbean have access to the essential therapeutic options available. <br><br> <strong>\nThe CAREST network, established on the basis of these objectives, holds legal recognition as an Association
